What Are the Best Gyms in San Luis Obispo?
If you’re looking for the best gym in San Luis Obispo, we’re going to give you a slightly annoying answer: It depends.
Because the best gym isn’t necessarily the biggest one, the cheapest one, the one with the most equipment, or even the one with the best reviews. The best gym in San Luis Obispo is the one that gives you what you need to actually show up, stay consistent, and make progress.
Some people love putting in their headphones and doing their own thing. Some want access to a huge selection of equipment. Some want yoga, Pilates, cycling, or CrossFit. Others want someone to tell them exactly what to do, make sure they’re doing it well, and help them get stronger over time.
There are a lot of ways to work out, especially here in San Luis Obispo. The question is: what are you looking for?
What should you look for in a gym?
Before comparing gyms based on price, equipment, or amenities, think about what actually helps you stay consistent. Do you want to work out independently, or do you prefer having a coach? Do you want access to equipment, or do you want your workouts planned for you? Are you looking primarily for cardio, strength training, mobility, or a combination? Do you like big classes with lots of energy, or would you rather be somewhere your trainer knows your name?
Are you already comfortable in a gym, or would having more guidance help you feel confident? And maybe most importantly: What kind of workout can you realistically see yourself doing week after week? That answer will probably tell you more about the best gym for you than any “Top 10 Gyms in San Luis Obispo” list ever could (and sorry, but we’re definitely not giving you that 😉).
So, what does McAlister Training offer?
At McAlister Training, we’ve built our studio for people who want the structure and progression of a well-designed strength program without having to figure it all out themselves. Our “bread and butter” is trainer-led group strength training in a small class environment. Though we offer personal and small group training and nutrition coaching, too.
Our programming has an athletic feel to it. That said, you absolutely do not have to consider yourself an athlete to train here, but we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to train like one. You come in. We’ve already planned the workout. A trainer coaches you through it, helps you choose appropriate weights, makes modifications or progressions when you need them, and genuinely gets to know you over time.
And because our programming is progressive, your workouts aren’t just a collection of random exercises designed to make you tired (if you know, you know). We train different muscle groups throughout the week and intentionally build on what you’ve done before. That gives you the opportunity to practice movements, increase your weights, improve your technique, and actually see yourself getting stronger.
Basically: we take the guesswork out of strength training.
McAlister Training might be a good fit if...
You want to strength train, but you don’t necessarily want to design your own workouts. You like the idea of group fitness, but still want a ton of individual coaching and attention. You want to understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Or maybe you’ve been working out for years, but you’re tired of piecing together random workouts and want programming that helps you continue progressing.
Our classes are capped at 16 people, which allows us to create the energy and community of a group workout while still giving our trainers the ability to, well, train.
That might mean helping you adjust your form, finding a movement that works better for your body if you need it, encouraging you to pick up a heavier dumbbell, or simply knowing when you need a little extra support that day.
What if McAlister Training isn’t what I’m looking for?
Then we might not be your best gym in San Luis Obispo—and that’s totally okay!
If you want to come and go whenever you want and have open access to rows of cardio machines and weight equipment, a traditional gym may make more sense for you! If yoga, Pilates, or barre is the way you love to move, there are so many amazing studios in our area (let us know if you need a rec!).
The goal isn’t to find the gym everyone else says is the best. It’s to find the place that makes it easier for you to keep showing up.
