What to Expect From a Nutrition Consultation

Lauren McAlister leading a personalized nutrition coaching consultation at McAlister Training in San Luis Obispo

Whether you're looking for more energy, better performance in your workouts, or a healthier relationship with food, nutrition coaching can be an incredibly powerful tool. But if you’ve never worked with a nutrition coach before, it’s normal to wonder what the process actually looks like.

At McAlister Training, our nutrition coaching program is designed to meet you where you are and create a realistic, sustainable plan that fits your real life—and it all starts with a 75-minute initial consultation.

This initial consultation can either be:

  • A one-time deep-dive session

  • The starting point of a full nutrition coaching package (4 months of individualized support)

And no, you don’t have to commit to ongoing coaching upfront. Many clients begin with a single consult and decide later if they’d like additional support. There’s no pressure either way. We’ll always build from where you are and create a plan that feels realistic for your life!

Before we meet

To make our time together as intentional and personalized as possible, before your first session you’ll complete:

  • A detailed intake form covering sleep, stress, lifestyle, preferences, relationship with food, health history, and more

  • A 3-day food journal to give us a look at your current eating patterns, meal timing, hydration, and energy levels

Together, these tools help paint a clearer picture of your day-to-day life so we can better understand what’s currently working, where you may be feeling stuck, and how to best support you moving forward.

During the actual consultation

During your session, we’ll take a deeper look at:

  • Macronutrient balance

  • Meal timing

  • Energy dips (hello, 3 PM slump 😅)

  • Recovery and workout fueling

  • Areas of under-fueling or inconsistent structure

  • Hunger, cravings, and overall eating patterns

Then we define what success actually looks like for you! For some clients, that means fat loss or body composition changes. For others, it’s more energy, better digestion, improved performance, reduced stress around food, or finally feeling more consistent with meals and snacks. Whatever your goals are, your nutrition plan should support your training, schedule, stress load, and real life. That’s always our goal.

What you’ll leave with

You won’t leave with a generic, one-size-fits-all meal plan (no, thank you). Instead, you’ll walk away with:

  • A personalized plan with clear next steps

  • Nutrition recommendations tailored to your goals and lifestyle

  • Follow-up resources and detailed session notes delivered via email

Most importantly, you’ll better understand what to focus on, why it matters, and how to adjust when real life inevitably happens (because it will). That’s a huge part of what makes our approach to nutrition coaching effective long-term.

What happens next?

From there, you can move forward in the way that works best for you:

  • Implement your plan on your own with confidence

  • Book individual follow-up sessions for accountability and adjustments

  • Transition into a full nutrition coaching package for deeper, ongoing support

Whether you’re looking for a reset, accountability, performance support, or simply a more sustainable approach to nutrition, our team in San Luis Obispo would love to support you.
