How Much Does Personal Training Cost in San Luis Obispo?
If you're thinking about personal training—in San Luis Obispo or elsewhere—one of the first questions you probably have is: How much does it cost?
The truth is, personal training rates can vary significantly from studio to studio, trainer to trainer, and even based on the type of coaching you're looking for. Since we can only speak to the pricing at our fitness studio in San Luis Obispo, we'll share what personal training costs at McAlister Training and explain some of the factors that commonly influence pricing, no matter where you live.
What factors affect personal training pricing?
Personal training rates often depend on several factors, including:
The trainer's experience and certifications. In many cases, the more experienced and specialized a trainer is, the higher their rates will be. Trainers who have spent years coaching clients, pursuing continuing education, and working with specific populations often charge more for their expertise.
Whether you're training one-on-one or in a small group. One-on-one training is typically the most expensive option because the entire session is tailored to you. If you're looking to save money while still receiving personalized coaching, training with a spouse, friend, or small group can be a great option (these sessions are always a ton of fun, too!).
Session length. Session lengths vary from studio to studio. At McAlister Training, most personal training sessions are 60 minutes because we believe clients benefit from having enough time for a proper warm-up, strength training, and cool-down without feeling rushed.
The frequency of your sessions. Some clients train once per week for accountability and program guidance, while others train two or three times per week for additional support and faster progress. Your overall investment will naturally depend on how often you meet with your trainer.
Whether you're purchasing a single session or a package. Many studios (including ours!) offer discounted rates when you purchase multiple sessions at once. If you know you'll be training consistently, packages typically provide a lower cost per session than purchasing sessions individually.
In general, you'll find that personal training is an investment in expert guidance, personalized coaching, accountability, and a plan designed specifically around your fitness level, goals, and lifestyle.
Personal training at McAlister Training
At McAlister Training, every personal training journey begins with a movement assessment. During this session, one of our trainers will evaluate your movement patterns, identify any limitations or asymmetries, discuss your goals, and help determine the best path forward (whether that’s our group classes or a personal/small group training pack!). This assessment is $90.
Because our trainers have different levels of experience, specialties, and availability, pricing varies depending on who you work with and the type of training you choose. The following is a general range for each type of personal/small group training at our studio in San Luis Obispo:
1:1 personal training: Approximately $90–$150 per session
2:1 personal training (per person): Approximately $60–$90 per session
Small group training (3–6 people): Approximately $50–$70 per session, per person
The best way to determine the right fit is to start with a movement assessment. From there, we'll help match you with a trainer and training option that aligns with your goals, schedule, and budget.
Is personal training worth it?
While we're admittedly a little biased, we believe personal training can be one of the fastest ways to build confidence, learn proper movement mechanics, stay accountable, and make meaningful progress toward your goals. A good trainer doesn't just tell you what exercises to do, they help you understand your body, learn the why behind the movements, and train smarter.
It's also worth noting that personal training doesn't have to be a forever thing! Many of our clients use personal or small group training to build a strong foundation before transitioning into group classes, while others use it as a supplement to their regular class routine for extra accountability or to help them make the most out of their time in class. While group classes are often a more budget-friendly option, there's something incredibly valuable about having a trainer's full attention, even if just for a season.
