we’re michael & lauren mcalister

We're the duo behind McAlister Training. Together, we’re passionate about helping others achieve healthy, happy, and balanced lives through approachable group training and nutrition in San Luis Obispo.

In an industry that can often be intimidating and focused on physical ideals, we’ve created a friendly space that welcomes all fitness levels and builds strong and capable bodies through circuit-based, strength training classes.

We couldn’t be more excited to share our second home in San Luis Obispo, the McAlister Training studio, and our unique and fun approach with you.

michael (aka coach)

A previous competitive wrestler, Michael is no stranger to early morning workouts, rivalry, and injuries. After moving from his home state of Washington to California to pursue a Kinesiology degree and a collegiate wrestling career, Michael was faced with yet another series of injuries and inevitably made the decision to hang up his wrestling shoes.

As one door closed, another opened when Michael moved to San Luis Obispo in 2010. With a passion for proper form and injury prevention, creative instead of monotonous strength training workouts, and teamwork rather than competition, Michael found his passion teaching fitness classes and working one-on-one with clients as a personal trainer.

After nearly 7 years training at local San Luis Obispo businesses, schools, and in client homes, Michael took the next step and, with Lauren by his side, opened the doors of McAlister Training.

lauren

A previous competitive dancer, Lauren is fueled by movement and a hard work ethic. Early on, she developed a passion for working out and expressing her love for others in the kitchen.

After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Lauren made her way into the medical marketing field but found her heart elsewhere: in wellness books, blogs, and podcasts.

After years of struggling with overexercise and restrictive eating herself, she realized that a healthy lifestyle was less about calories and cardio at the gym, and more about balance. With this new mindset, Lauren ditched her dogmatic approach to nutrition and fitness — and vowed to help others do the same.

Now a Certified Nutritional Therapy Consultant, Lauren helps others fuel their lives (and workouts) with nourishing food, positive lifestyle change, and self-love.
